Alex defender George Ray says derby win came at just the right time
Crewe Alexandra defender George Ray is hoping that the club’s first League win of the season against Port Vale will be a springboard for a much run of results. Following Saturday’s 2-1 win over near neighbours Port Vale, the Railwaymen travel to Yeovil this evening in a buoyant mood and Ray is hoping that the three points will give everyone a much needed lift.
Crewe remain bottom of League One but getting that first league win of the season, has certainly installed some lost confidence ahead of tonight’s tough game at Huish Park.
Ray told Crewe Alex Player: “"The victory over Port Vale has given everyone a big lift. It is always good to get three points and to win against Port Vale because of what it means to the fans and to the club.
“It was a great feeling to win. The fans were great to us throughout the game and it was great to get my fist goal. Hopefully winning the derby has done me good. I'll have to speak to the gaffer and Bakes (Neil Baker) and see what they think. I gave a penalty away which I am disappointed about, but it happens.
"I've never been so tired at the end, we were under the cosh so much in the second half it was just defend, defend, defend.
"We did play some good football too although, in the second half, I felt we could have made more of our counter attacks.
"We'd lost five games but we just had to give it everything, and we did. The gaffer and Bakes told us to keep doing what they are telling us to do and it will pay off, and it did.
He added: "It was great to get a goal. Being a centre-half, I know how strikers think and the ball went over my head so I pulled off my man hoping Marcus (Haber) would win the header and he did. I just got my foot to it and put it past the keeper.”
