Boss says there is a passage into his team if they perform consistently well
Steve Davis has told the club’s official web-site that he will continue to pick players on form rather than just select our own Academy players. The Alex boss has given almost everyone in his senior squad a chance to impress this season. In fact only James Jones, John Johnston, Perry NG and Callum Prichard-Ellis who are yet to earn any game time for the first-team this season.
Davis has stressed that he will continue to look to select the right team for the right opposition regardless of if they are an Academy graduate, have come in from elsewhere or are currently on loan.
The Crewe boss told crewealex.net: “I have not become obsessed with how many Academy players we have in the squad or in the starting line-up. I will always select what I think is the right thing for the team.
“If there are three former Academy players in the team then that is great. If there are 7 or 8 then that is even better but I will continue to pick players on form.
“The players here will see that there is a route into the team if they play well. If they play well for the Under-21s or are consistent in training then they will get a chance. That is what has happened with George (Cooper) and before him Billy (Waters). The passage is there for them.
“They get judged on their performances and I’ve always said that I wanted to utilise the Academy. Why wouldn’t I? Saying that I only select them when the time is right and they have to play well to stay in the team.”
