Crewe hopeful that Chris Atkinson will get over his recent illness to resume training tomorrow

Crewe Alexandra is hopeful that midfielder Chris Atkinson will get over a recent bout of illness to declare himself available for selection for this weekend’s trip to Crawley. Atkinson was withdrawn in the club’s Development Squad match with Nottingham Forest on Monday when he was too unwell to continue.

In the wake of Anthony Grant’s one match suspension for his red card against Sheffield United, Atkinson was attempting to stake his claim for a starting place in Steve Davis’s starting XI this weekend. Jamie Ness is also thought to pushing for a recall after his impressive display as a second half substitute against the Blades.

Steve Davis explained to the club’s official web-site: “Chris needed a game for the Under-21s but he wasn’t able to complete the 90 minutes because he felt unwell. He had to come off.

“We are hoping that Chris will be well enough to resume training on Thursday and then we will decide if he is well enough to travel on Friday to Crawley.”
