Steve Davis on Crewe's new emerging young talent George Cooper
Steve Davis says young prospect George Cooper just has to continue with what he is doing to really establish himself as a first team player. The young forward recently celebrated his 18th birthday with his second goal at senior level against Crawley Town in Saturday’s 1-1 draw. Cooper immediately propelled himself into the limelight with a stunning free-kick against Coventry City on his full home debut for the club.
Steve Davis says that the Warrington-born forward has the perfect temperament to keep himself grounded as he attempts to retain his first team place with his mature performances.
“George handles it well and we will continue to protect him. There will be days when he has an off day and will struggle in the game, ‘Steve said.
"That happens with all young players and it may be a case of taking him back out and then easing him back out.
“Physically we will have to keep an eye on him and he has been on the receiving end of a few tackles in recent weeks. He will have to get used to that because he will become a marked man because he is a game-changer. George has the ability to produce something out of nothing.
“It is still very early in his development and he is by no means perfect. He can improve his defensive work and he is working hard on that. He did that extremely well at Crawley and we will continue to manage him right.
“He is a great lad to work with and has a level head. He has a calm temperament and he just has to keep on doing what he is doing and strive to improve. He has great qualities and we will be guide him into the right areas to make him even more of a threat.”
