Alex boss says young Waters will rediscover early season form

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis is backing 20-year-old Billy Waters to rediscover his early season form and become an important player for us this season. Young Waters was arguably the club’s most consistent performer in the first six months of the season, showing his potential for goals with close range finishes against Barnsley in the Capital One Cup and away at Yeovil. His other strike remains a stronger contender for our goal of the season against Barnsley during our league encounter.

Waters’ last start for the club came in the 3-0 home defeat by Notts County at the end of September although he has been in named in squads since and has made three appearances from the bench.

Steve Davis told crewealex.net that it is expected that a young player will have a dip in form after really impressing in the first part of the season. “Billy’s form has dipped since the early part of the season but that is to be expected because he is still a young player learning the game.

“He did better than we expected when he first went into the team. He did fantastically well and showed that he can get in the opposition box and score goals. He was playing regularly and doing well and then has had a little dip.

“He is an honest lad and he is working hard to get going again and he is still very much in our thoughts. It can happen with young players and he will keep himself going and I’m sure he will be pushing for a first team place again before too long.

Steve added: “He can play various positions but we see Billy as a forward player because he does have a knack of scoring goals. When he is a threat in and around the box then it is important that he is further up the pitch.”
