Academy Can Produce Game Changers

Steve says club have special talents coming through the ranks

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis firmly believes that our game changing players will have to come through the club’s renowned Academies as they will be too expensive to bring in from the outside. Davis feels that with prolific forwards and creative players becoming rare on the market, the club have to produce our own.

The Alex boss has certainly welcomed the timing of George Cooper coming through as a potential match winner and he has natural goal scorer Callum Saunders wanting in the wings once he has developed physically to cope with the demands of League One football.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “Those players who will really make difference to us are expensive, out of our reach or are not available. Every manager is after a natural goalscorer, so they are reluctant to let them out if they do.

“It makes things tough but we have produced those special types of players before. Players such as Powelly have come through and taken us to another level and that is what we are striving to do. We have to produce our own.

“George (Cooper) has the potential to be a match winner and he has to continue to work to improve. Callum is a natural goal scorer. He has scored goals all the way through and has a knack for putting the ball in the net. Those types of players are hard to come by but we are confident that the club’s Academy can continue to produce special players.”
