Boss looks for at least three to hit double figures

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis is hoping that members of his squad will emerge as potential goalscorers last season. The Alex boss says that he is looking for at least three players to reach double figures next season and says that now that leading scorer Chuks Aneke has returned to Arsenal following his 17 goals on loan, it is time for others to step up to the challenge.

Only the on-loan Aneke hit double figures and he finished well ahead of second placed Mathias Pogba, who hit five goals, despite only returning to action in January.

A new forward looks certain to be at the head of Steve Davis’s recruitment this summer.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “Only Chuks scored double figures for us and after that we were struggling. Pogba was next on five goals and he missed half of the season.

“Mathias has hit double figures before in this league and Brad (Inman) went close the season before. Brad didn’t manage it this year and although he could have done if he hadn’t been injured, Ryan (Colclough) only scored those two against Tranmere earlier in the season.

“I think you need three players getting double figures if you are to stand a chance. If you don’t, like we did, then you are sure to struggle.

“With Chuks going back to Arsenal then it will be up to someone else to step up to the plate and score the goals we will need to make it a better season for us.”
