Boss sas if defender stays then he would be obvious choice for club captain
Steve Davis says if Matt Tootle remains at the club beyond this summer then he will obviously be considered to become the official club captain. Tootle showed himself to an able replacement for Abdul Osman this season as injury and form saw his miss a number of matches. Tootle's consistent and exceptional form saw him claim both main awards at the end of season awards on Sunday evening.
The club’s right-back seemed to thrive with the armband, much in the same way that previous Academy graduates Ashley Westwood and Luke Murphy did before him.
Steve told the club’s official web-site: “I haven’t really thought about a captain for next season yet. A lot can change between now and the start of next season.
“Of course, if he is still here then Matt would be an obvious candidate for that. He has shown he can do it and he was a terrific leader for us when we needed him.
“There would be one or two other contenders in the squad as well and we can see the affect it had on Mat and the likes of Murph and Westy before him. They all grew with the honour and with the extra responsibility.”
