Steve: "Would Like Max To Stay"

19 May 2014

Boss echoes the words of Dario by hoping talented teenager will re-sign for us

Steve Davis, the Crewe Alexandra manager, has reiterated the words of the club’s director of football Dario Gradi in hoping that Max Clayton remains at Crewe Alexandra. The England youth international has entered the last year of his contract and spent the second half of the sidelines after fracturing his ankle, but the club have made in the words of Davis ‘a generous, good offer’ to tempt him to stay and develop further with us.

Dario revealed to the media last week that he ‘would like Clayton to stay’ and that if new terms cannot be agreed then the local lad would not be permitted to leave cheaply.

Steve has echoed the words of his former manager by stating: “We have made an offer to Max. That situation hasn’t changed and it has been on the table a long time because we would like him to stay.

“He could still play a big part here for us and we would like him to stay and develop. He has missed a lot of football through injury last season, but I can only echo the words Dario said last week that we like to keep him here.

“That final decision will probably be made by Max and his agent but all I can say is we have done everything we can to try and keep him. The ball is in their court.

“Of course, if the right offer came in for him and it suited the Football Club and Max still wanted to leave then we wouldn’t stand in his way, but like Dario said it would have to be right for us.”
