Steve Davis says fans and players made right choice as Tootle receives double award
Steve Davis has praised the club’s player-of-the-year Matt Tootle after the consistent captain was named as the supporters and players’ player of the season at the presentation night on Sunday. Tootle was the winner ahead of other candidates Chuks Aneke, Ben Garratt and Anthony Grant.
Steve told crewealex.net: “Matt was the obvious choice for the player-of-the-year award and has been the outstanding candidate because it should be judged over a whole season. The player of the year award starts in August and ends in May. It is not from Christmas or from April-to-May, it is a reflection of the whole season.
“Matt has had a terrific season and has developed into a real leader. I agreed with the choice and as I said on the night, the main award would be to be named players-player of the year because to be appreciated by your team-mates has to be the highlight. That would be the most rewarding for any player because you are with them all week.
“Maybe it is something to do with the captain’s armband. It happened for Luke (Murphy) last season and now Matt and he thoroughly deserved the accolade.”
