Lessons Learned With Recruitment

Chairman John Bowler says club will be better when it comes to bringing the right players in

Crewe Alexandra chairman John Bowler says lessons have been learned with our recruitment drive last summer.

In the wake of Luke Murphy’s departure to Leeds United, the club certainly invested in new recruits with five players signing and Chuks Aneke agreeing to a season-long loan from Arsenal.

By the end of the season, two of those summer signings Thierry Audel and Lee Molyneux were out on loan at Lincoln and Accrington Stanley respectively.

Whilst some signings worked out, others did not and the club appointed Chris Johnson as chief scout to help improve our recruitment options.

Chairman John Bowler told Crewe Alex Player: “We lost Luke Murphy and we’d got to bring players in to compliment what we were doing. We would hold our hands up and say that our recruitment last summer didn’t give us what we were hoping it would give us.

“One lesson that we have got to learn is that we have to bring in the right players with the right experience and players who can fit in to our academy way of playing football.

“I think we’ve got a lot of lessons to learn. Every day we say ‘how did things go,’ ‘where could we have done it better.’ There’s a lot to look back on this year and, credit to the board, Steve and Neil and we’ve had a number of meetings to talk football and everything Crewe Alex.”
