Fond Farewell - Kelvin Mellor

16 May 2014

Local lad became two times Wembley winner

Local lad Kelvin Mellor signed for Crewe Alexandra from neighbours Nantwich Town in 2008 as a promising defender. Although it was former boss Dario Gradi, who handed him his first team debut as a late substitute away at Morecambe in November 2010, he really burst onto the scene in our promotional season of 2012.

Mellor established himself in Steve Davis’s side in February and continued all the way through to that Wembley triumph at Wembley. Along the way, Mellor scored his first senior goal in a3-0 win over Bristol Rovers in April.

Mellor played right-back at Wembley against Cheltenham and performed admirably to keep the oppositions danger man Jermaine McGlashan quiet in our 2-0 win.

Mellor went on to make 42 appearances in our first League One campaign and once again performed superbly at Wembley to help us lift the Football League with a 2-0 win over Southend United.

The 23-year-old continued to be a regular fixture in the team under Steve Davis but with Matt Tootle returning to his more familiar right-back spot and Jon Guthrie emerging at left-back, Kelvin found his chances limited in the second half of last season.

His final performance came as a late substitute away at Gillingham in March and his final goal in a defeat at Rotherham United in January 2014.

Mellor, who can play at right-back or as a centre-half, previously spent time on loan at Leek, Icelandic side IBV and his previous club Nantwich.

As a local lad, Mellor was always popular with supporters and his likeable personality saw him fondly regarded in the community whenever he was asked to do presentations or meet sponsors.

We wish Kelvin every success with his future.
