Boss praises fans contribution after wonderful end to a hard season
Steve Davis has praised the club’s supporters as they came out in numbers to play their part in helping Crewe Alexandra remain in League One. The Alex boss hailed the atmosphere inside a vibrant Alexandra Stadium as the finest he has ever experienced as a spectator when he was Nantwich boss or now as our first team manager.
After the club’s 2-1 win, Steve told crewealex.net: “The fans were absolutely magnificent today and when we needed them here and behind their team, they came out and got behind them. It was a magnificent achievement by everyone.
“We have had a really difficult season with all the numerous problems we have had on-and-off the pitch so to come through it on the final day is an unbeatable achievement. From what we have gone through, this is a bigger achievement than Wembley.
“I have never seen support like that here. I have come here to watch games when I was manager at Nantwich and when I moved onto Crewe and I have never seen or heard anything like that. They were tremendous and really helped us.
“They got behind the players from the start and everywhere you looked there was red and white. The Gresty Road End never stopped signing and the main stand joined in. There were quiet moments when it seemed we were safe but when we asked them to lift it they did. I enjoyed everything about the support apart from the flares.
“We will need them again next year because we are underdogs in this league and their support is vital. We are realistic and know it is tough because of the financial restrictions. As long as they keep on coming then we will keep on fighting for them.”
