Steve says no-one pressing the panic button paid off

Steve Davis admits that last season was ‘mentally draining’ but he says he has learned a lot from the experience. Crewe Alexandra escaped the drop on the final day of the season thanks to a superb 2-1 win over Preston North End and while other clubs around the bottom changed their managers or brought in a large amount of players in on loan, Davis says that our calmness during a pressurised situation paid dividends.

Steve told crewealex.net: “I am sure the last season took a lot out of everyone involved. It was mentally draining but the real positive was that everyone coped with the situation. Everyone inside the club was calm and kept going.

“That was a real positive to take forward. While there may have been people panicking or writing us off, we didn’t panic inside these four walls and that was key to us achieving what we did. When the pressure mounted, the players and staff kept control of their emotions.

“I think that calmness rubbed off on everyone. Regardless of the situation we found ourselves in, we didn’t change our principles. We don’t get too high when things are going well or too low when they don’t. Having that balance is crucial.”
