Steve: "We Stayed In The Game"

Boss gives us his post-match reaction after Swindon

Steve Davis was pleased that his Crewe Alexandra stayed in a difficult game to come away with what could prove to be a good point. Vadaine Oliver came off the bench to score a stunning equaliser for the Railwaymen with 13 minutes remaining.

Swindon had taken a deserved lead just minutes into the second half through an equally stunning strike from Ryan Harley.

After a 1-1 draw, Steve told the club’s official web-site: “We stayed in the game which was important because they had a lot of possession and when we did get the ball we didn’t do enough to keep it and counter. Half time couldn’t really come quick enough in fairness.

I’d have to see it again but I thought it was a little bit fortunate, but we’d have taken it. We’ve not had a lot of luck this season, but very uncharacteristically Chuks has put it over the bar. “We missed the penalty.

“Second half we talked about being a bit better with our passing and attacking a bit more, trying to create a bit more and after an hour I thought we weren’t going to do much so I just wanted to make some changes.

“I decided to put Billy and Vadaine on and hoped they’d be able to inspire us and I thought we were excellent after they came on the pitch.

It worked and we caused them no end of problems towards the end of the game, but we really didn’t get going until the last 15 minutes. “The front four were very disappointing today and the two that came on gave us some life. We changed the shape to try and sit on the deeper one so we could put three up to try and get a bit more thrust going forward.

“We battled it out and it was a hard earned point in the end. They’ll be disappointed that they didn’t hurt us more in the final third despite that long shot at the near post.

“I think we should have done better against the number three who jinked past and got through far too easily and then the lad was there to beat Ben at the near post.

“We were a little bit taken back by the goal but we kept ourselves going and the substitutions were the difference today.

“Billy didn’t surprise me. We know what he’s capable of and now we know he can produce it on match days. With the limited amount of options I had left, he was the one with Vadaine and I was really impressed with the pair of them when they came on.” He added:
