Steve says young guns could cause a real surprise
Steve Davis has told crewealex.net that places will be very much up for grabs this season. The Alex boss has signed six first year professionals this summer and has tied up more promising young players on longer deals from the Academy. He has also secured the futures of the club’s most promising young players and hopes to add Max Clayton to that list if he can be persuaded to extend his stay with the club.
The Alex boss has certainly continued the club’s philosophy of giving youth a chance and he hasn’t ruled out some of his new crop breaking into the first-team squad and putting pressure on those currently ahead of them.
Steve told crewealex.net: “At any club at any level, you have to do well to be in contention and it doesn’t matter what age they. If they look better than what we got then they will play. It is as simple as that.
“I would like nothing more for the younger ones to come in and surprise us. I’d like as many of the younger lads to get into the team and show that they can play at this level. It is what this club is about and it is a great opportunity for all of them.
“All the young players we have signed have great potential. That is always exciting for us and for our supporters who enjoy seeing the homegrown lads come through.
“They have no first team experience at the moment but that doesn’t mean they can’t surprise you. They could play in the team this season but we’ll have to see. What they do know is if they do well then they have every chance.”
