Neil Baker says that our success at Academy level shows we are heading in the right direction
Neil Baker says the success of the club at Under-21 and Under-18 level last season has shown everyone that Crewe Alexandra is in good hands. The club’s Under-21s won the Elite Professional League Two trophy with a 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers and the Under-18s were unfortunate to lose their own final after a penalty shoot-out defeat to Huddersfield Town.
The club have offered professional contracts to a number of those youth players who helped the club to those achievements and Baker says he is looking forward to seeing them progress over the coming season.
The club’s assistant manager told the club’s official web-site: “We have signed some good young players and it will be interesting to see them progress.
“There are probably no big hitters among them at the moment but they can still come through and surprise you. They can go on very quickly and they know they will get a chance here if they do well for the Under-21s. It is about them taking those chances.
“The Under-21s and Under-18s enjoyed great seasons. For the Under-21s to win their final and for the Under-18s to lose theirs only after a penalty shoot-out was a real achievement. It showed everybody that the club is in good hands and that we continue to produce good, young players of our own.”
