List Devised For Keeper Replacement

3 June 2014

Steve Davis has held talks with two over goalkeeping position

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis has returned from a short break in Cyprus and has revealed to the club’s official web-site that whilst he was away, he conducted a phone conversation with two possible goalkeeper replacements for the out-going Steve Phillips.

Davis is after an experienced goalkeeper, who will offer competition to the club’s current number one Ben Garratt and also take on a coaching role with us.

Phillips, 36, left his first-team and Academy coaching post this summer after Steve Davis decided not to renew his playing contract.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “It was nice to have a short break but I’ve been kept in touch with things through Neil (Baker) and we will be in this week again to follow up what needs to be done.

“Chris Johnson and Phil Swift have been in as well as we step up our recruitment and although it is still early and no-one really commits at this stage of the closed season, we are making progress.

“I held talks with two goalkeepers whilst I was away. They fit the description of what we are looking for. We need someone who can challenge Ben for the number one spot but who is also interested in coaching.

“I was honest with them and they want to think about what they want to do. They are in the transitional stage, very much Steve (Phillips) was with us. It would be a case of balancing the two and them deciding that they would like to coach and develop that side of their career.

“I had a couple of conversations with them about what they are thinking. I’ve managed to acquire a list of three or four players so hopefully we will manage to sort something there sooner rather than later.”
