Winger maybe given more time to prove himself at Crewe

Steve Davis has revealed that he may give winger John Johnston move time to prove himself at Crewe Alexandra. The former Leek man signed a short-term deal with the club in January but was loaned back to the Staffordshire-based club to help them in their quest for promotion.

Johnston continued to train with Crewe Alexandra and featured in a number of Under-21 games for the club, but Davis says the coaching staff may need some more time before deciding on his future.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “We spoke about John and his future before I went away on holiday and we will continue to do so because there is going to be mixed opinions about him.

“I say that only because we have only had a short time period to judge him. When he returned to Leek on loan and we went to watch him, it is difficult to judge him because of the standard he was playing in. That is why we were keen to bring in on an extended trial if you like.

“He has got something and he has shown that while he has been here with us. As a young player from the non-league, he will quite naturally have a dip in form. He came in and did very well initially and other days he found it difficult. You have to expect that.

“When you have come in on a short term deal you perhaps don’t feel 100% part of it and it can take a bit longer for you to prove yourself.

“We will continue to discuss John and it maybe that he needs a bit more time. We will perhaps look to keep him until at least the New Year and give him that time but we’ll have to wait and see. What I will look to do is to make the right decision for John and his career.”
