Davis To Explore Free Market First

Alex boss says PFA list just got longer...

Steve Davis says he is working through the extensive PFA release list to see who is available. The Alex boss is aiming to bring in at least three new recruits this summer and has already enhanced his approach for an experienced goalkeeper to challenge and coach Ben Garratt.

The Alex boss has gone on record to suggest that he is targeting a midfielder, a winger and a centre-forward, possible two if Max Clayton and Byron Moore elect not to sign contract extensions.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “The PFA list is vast and there are players of all ages and ability on it. It seems to be getting longer each year and there are a lot of players available.

“We are not looking to increase numbers in our squad but to add three or four who will improve our team. We need to replace some, not all, of the ones that have left us in the summer and at this stage it is a bit of a waiting game.

“There are a lot of free transfers but we will try to get the best ones we can. It is difficult to do anything at this stage of the season because a player and his agent will wait for their best option.

“I don’t think we will be looking to spend money on players. We have done that over the last couple of years. We paid for Mark Ellis, Brad (Inman) and Mathias Pogba. They were only nominal fees but we will look at the free market first.

He added: “If there was a player who we felt would make a real difference to us and there was a small fee involved then I am sure that would be made available, but there is no-one that comes into that bracket at the moment.”
