Won't Be Rushed Into Signing Players

1 July 2014

Steve says he wants to be sure of signing the right players

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis is adamant that he won’t be signing players this summer for the sake of it. Crewe have signed a number of Academy graduates this summer to bolster the first-team squad, but Davis is yet to sign any new recruits on a permanent or loan basis.

Davis won’t be rushed into signing players just to boost his squad numbers, instead waiting patiently in the market to add quality players who will make a difference to us.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “It is a frustrating time of year and it has been fairly quiet because more clubs are now tightening their belts financially as well. There are a lot of players out there who try and keep their options open for as long as possible.

“It has been fairly quiet so far. We have set our targets high this summer because I only want players here who are going to improve the team.

“I could have quickly gone out and signed 20,30,40 players, who have all been offered to us but we don’t want to make mistakes. We want the right players here, with the right character.

“There is no point gambling with signing players. We have learned that with a few last season and we want to get it as right as we possibly can.

“I don’t want players here if they are potentially as good as the young players we already have. We do have targets in mind but it is a waiting game at this stage.

He added: “We have a list of targets. If we get our first or second choices remains to be seen but we may be fortunate this year with the amount of players now available and teams cutting their squad numbers. “
