Davis gearing up for League One challenge

Steve Davis admits that it is getting tougher each year to compete financially with other League One clubs, but that only emphasises the challenge ahead.

Davis hailed our survival in League One last season as his ‘greatest achievement’ to date and he wants our end of season form to continue heading into the new campaign.

Steve told crewealex.net: “I thought we were terrific in the run-in. The players handled the pressure really well and we lost only one of our last six games. I would like that form to continue going in to the new season.

“We have learned a lot from a tough season and the players deserve to be in League One. They earned the right but we all know we have to try and improve.

“It is tough in League One. We know that and it is difficult for us to match other clubs financially but our club is well run and we won’t gamble with that. We live within our means and don’t spend what we cannot afford.

“We are certainly not a big club but we are well run and have great supporters and great people who work for the club. We are what we are and the majority of our fans understand that.

“The fans who have been with us for 20, 30, 40 years know what Crewe Alexandra is all about. There are some new fans, who may have come along to Wembley twice who want success after success but that is the way football has gone.

He added: “99% of our fan base know how difficult it is and how we utilise our Academy to give us a chance. We always face every challenge head on.”
