Steve delighted to have added the experienced Scott Shearer to his squad
The experienced Scott Shearer will offer competition to Ben Garratt for the number one jersey according to boss Steve Davis. Although the Crewe Alexandra manager was eager to bring in the former Rotherham United goalkeeper to replace the out-going Steve Phillips on the coaching side, he also wanted a stopper to challenge young Garratt for the number one spot.
Shearer, 33, has signed a two-year with the club following his release from newly promoted Rotherham United and Davis says his experience will only enhance his young group.
Steve told crewealex.net: “I was pleased to sign Scott because he is great lad and a very good goalkeeper. He is still only 33 and that is still relatively young for a goalkeeper. He has a wealth of experience and was around a promotion winning team last season.
“He was around the Rotherham dressing room and was a part of their success, so that will only rub off on our younger players. He is the right character. He is one who will put his arm around the younger players and encourage them.
“I had the option of bringing in some very good, younger goalkeepers, but I wanted a more experienced one. He has come here looking to develop his coaching and to acquire his qualifications in that field.
“Scott has great experience of this league and has played around 300 games so he knows what it about and that will help us.
“He has come here to play and that is what I wanted. He isn’t going to settle for second best and sitting on the bench and that is the challenge I wanted to create.
He added: “If one of them is injured or has a dip in form then I know I have two very good goalkeepers. I was pleased to have got it done.”
