Shearer After Number One Jersey

Scott Shearer excited by coaching opportunity but he says he wants to start every game

Crewe Alexandra’s new goalkeeper Scott Shearer has told Crewe Alex Player that he is excited by the prospect of helping the next generation of goalkeepers come through our Academy system but the Glasgow-born stoppers says he has come here to be number one.

Following his release from Rotherham United this summer, Shearer, 33, is targeting the number one position and after spending the last few days training with Ben Garratt, he admits that it is going to be an intriguing battle for the spot.

Shearer told Crewe Alex Player: “I am delighted to have signed and once I knew that Crewe were interested that really whetted my appetite.

“The manager has bought me in to add a bit of experience and help out at the training ground with the younger lads.

“The manager has also given me a chance to really start my coaching and help the young lads coming through. As I’ve got older I have been doing that instinctively anyway at my other clubs, helping the younger ones, not just the goalkeepers, and I’m excited by having that extra responsibility here.

“My main aim is to try and become number one and start every game. I know that Ben (Garratt) is a good prospect and played some good games last season. If he starts then I will be pushing him all the way.

Scott added: “I have only been here for a short while but Ben looks a very capable goalkeeper. He has been very good in training and it is going to be a good battle. “
