Boss Hoping Patience Pays Off

Steve Davis hoping targets will come to fruition

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis has admitted his frustration in not being able to add any more signings to those of goalkeeper Scott Shearer or midfielder Chris Atkinson, but his patience could yet pay off.

Davis is after attacking reinforcements and stresses that a number of his possible loan targets are still at their respective clubs. The only one the manager has missed out on is the young winger Gwion Edwards who joined Crawley from Swansea City.

Davis has not rushed into making signings this summer but he knows that with Mathias Pogba expected to leave the club this week, he needs to strengthen his attacking options ahead of the new season.

Steve told crewealex.net: “It has been frustrating not to have been able to bring in more players and integrate them into the squad, but that is the way it is. Clubs want to keep their players to use in the pre-season and the players want to give it a go and see where they are at the end of it.

“It has been more of a waiting game this time around. I have liked to get players in early in the past but it has been different this time around. Hopefully, our patience will pay off. We know what we need and we are holding out for quality.

“The advantage we have of players being at their respective clubs during the pre-season is that they are training and playing games, so they should come here in good physical condition. We shouldn’t be waiting for them to get fit.

He added: “When the players we are interested in realise that they are not in or around the first team squad then they should become more readily available.”
