Steve: "We lacked quality today"

Boss gives us his reaction after 1-0 loss at Prenton Park

Steve Davis couldn't hide his disappointment after his side slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Tranmere Rovers. The only goal of the game came via a straight forward corner just before the half an hour mark and although Crewe Alexandra vastly improved in the second half, we couldn't find that equaliser.

Steve told the club's official web-site: "It was a difficult day with the conditions and it was who was going to adapt better to that. I didn't think there was anything in the game and the first half was a scrap. We got dragged into that and that suited Tranmere better. We got caught up in that and the first half lacked real quality. It was untidy and we spoke about it at half time and I thought we played better football in the second half. We wanted them to pass the ball better and move it quickly.

"We were better, pushed them back but we just lacked some quality in the final third. We didn't create too much. I think the best chance fell to Byron but his was a poor effort and Uche has sent one straight to the goalkeeper. I can't fault their effortr but we need to be better in the final third of the pitch.

"They didn't create much either and we have conceded a really disappointing goal again. We didn't mark properly and the guy has just lost Kelvin, I think, I will have to look at that again. It isn't the first time it has happened and it is those little margins that have cost us.

"They didn't have many efforts either and I think Ben made one save to make right at the end on the break. I thought we defended reasonably well and Koumas controlled the midfield better than we did. Now we have to go again and make sure we are physically and mentally ready for Stevenage on Tuesday night."
