Steve: "Good All Round Performance"

1 January 2014

Crewe boss Steve Davis gives us his New Years Day reaction

Steve Davis was pleased that his Crewe side could build on their 2-1 success at Colchester United with another deserved three points against Carlisle. The Alex had to endure an anxious last 10 minutes or so after Tom Lawrence had fired the Cumbrians back into the contest via a free-kick but second half strikes from Chuks Aneke and Mesca proved enough on the day.

"The players worked really hard for that and I was pleased with the overall performance from us. We just have to keep going and make sure we continue to pick up points."

"We have been encouraging Brad to get on the outside of the defender. He did that at Colchester and we scored and it has done it again this afternoon and we have scored. Mesca has got in at the back post to score his first goal so that is great for us and for him.

"Tom and Chuks have combined again for he goal. Tom has cushioned the cross back to Chuks and it is a terrific finish from him. It was a fantastic goal with the outside of the boot. He is capable of that, we know that, we have seen it before and he is in great form.

"We wanted them to carry that on in the second half and for the most part we did, aside from the last anxious moments at the end.

"But they continued to work hard and we finished the first half strongly and had opportunities to be in front at half-time. Chuks has hit the woodwork with a header and Brad was unlucky with that effort after an excellent run.

After another 2-1 win and back-to-back wins for the first time since October, Steve told crewealex.net: "I thought we deserved the three points overall, although we had a bit of an anxious last ten minutes or so and we didn't start the game particularly well either. It was a bit like Colchester in that respect because it took us a bit of time to get going there.
