Alex boss Steve Davis on a 2-0 win over MK Dons
Following Crewe Alexandra’s 2-0 win over MK Dons, Alex boss Steve Davis was understandably delighted to see the Alex climb out of the relegation zone with their second win of 2014.
A goal in each half by Chuks Aneke and Ajay Leitch-Smith was enough to give the Alex the win on a wet night at Gresty Road.
Speaking after the game, Steve said: “It was a really pleasing night. We were a bit slow to get out of the traps but after the first 15 minutes we managed to get ourselves going. MK Dons are always going to have a lot of possession but we kept our shape and took our chances when they came.
Chuks has scored a great free-kick to give us the lead. I am surprised he took the ball but the goals he has scored has obviously given him great confidence. It might have taken a little deflection off the wall but I don’t care, it’s a goal!
"Then it was equally pleasing to see Ajay score. I have to say that I was going to take him off at half-time but he managed to get himself going and worked very hard. He certainly didn’t show any lack of confidence with the way he took the goal.
"Of course the second-half could have been so different had Shaun Williams converted an early second-half penalty after an apparent handball by Crewe defender Matt Tootle.
Steve thought the penalty was harsh but delighted to see a team effort pay-off in keeping the spot-kick out
“I think the penalty was a little harsh because I think the ball has struck him around the chest arm area and he hasn’t really moved his hand to the ball.
“But thankfully Ben has gone the right way and made a great save. Our video analyst has watched their penalties so we had an idea of where he would be going, but Ben has moved that little bit earlier and given himself every chance of making a save and I am delighted for him.”
