Quality In Final Third Now

16 January 2014

Steve pleased that his side are now a major threat in the final third of the pitch

Steve Davis says the loan signing of Uche Ikpeazu from Watford and the return to fitness of Mathias Pogba will only provide competition for places in the attacking third of the pitch. The Alex boss has been handed a major boost with the recent return of Pogba from a serious knee injury and Ikpeazu had the most impressive goalscoring record at youth level last season for his previous club Reading.

Davis is pleased that his attacking options have improved considerably lately, especially when you consider the merits of AJ Leitch-Smith and Vadaine Oliver as well. With Brad Inman back in the goals again at Rotherham and Chuks Aneke leading our goalscoring charts with six goals,

Steve told crewealex.net: “We would have liked to have got an experienced, proven goalscorer in but they don’t tend to be around and our finances dictate what we can do anyway.

“On the other hand I like to bring in young, hungry players, who want to do well and have a point to prove. I think we have that with Uche. He is determined to show what he has got at this level and that can only be good for us.

“We also have Pogba back now. He may need a few games to get his match sharpness back but it is like having a new player. They have only added quality and competition for places at just the right time.”
