Honour To Be Captain

29 January 2014

Toots delighted to fill-in as skipper for Abdul

Matt Tootle has told the club’s official web-site that he felt slightly affected when he was handed the captains’ armband for the first time in his career. The consistent full-back has replaced Abdul Osman as the club skipper for the time being after the combative midfielder recently lost his place in the starting line-up.

Tootle appreciates that he has only has the honour as a stand-in, but says it was an ambition realised when he captained the side against the MK Dons. He retained the armband for last weekend’s trip to Tranmere.

Matt told “When I found I was captain I was a bit overwhelmed to be honest because of how long I've been here and the games I've played for the club.

“I've always looked up to the captain here, even Luke Murphy, who is only a year older than me. I hope people feel the same way about me. I think it affected me a little bit in the first 10 minutes against the MK Dons. I felt like I had to do extra, I was doing flicks and trying to be better than I am.

“But I've settled down now and it is very nice. I always thought I could be a captain. I used to lead by example when I was a kid. I do feel I have knowledge of the game and if I can help anyone on the pitch I can talk as well. But it is temporary, Abdul is our club captain and I am sure he'll be back in the team soon. “
