Boss On Sheffield United

31 January 2014

Steve Davis on Nigel Clough's different type of pressure

Steve Davis says Sheffield United have it tough in League One because they are always considered to be a major scalp. The Alex will be looking to improve on their 3-1 defeat at Bramall Lane earlier in the season as both clubs try and avoid the drop into League Two. Clough's first match in charge was against the Railwaymen as the struggling Blades recorded only their third win of the season.

Steve has been full of praise for the job Nigel Clough has achieved during his three months at Bramall Lane because there is continuous pressure on them as one of the largest clubs at this level.

Ahead of the fixture at Gresty Road, Steve told “It is not easy for a club like Sheffield United at this level because they are a big club and everyone wants to beat them. They have to deal with that added pressure and it can be difficult when teams raise their games at Bramall Lane or at their own grounds.

“They have found it difficult to get out the League. They have failed twice in the play-offs and it is a fight every week for them because everyone would like to upset the odds and claim a scalp. They have a lot of support and expectations are high and that isn’t easy to deal with.

“Nigel has come into a difficult situation and they are still in-and-around the bottom four so he knows there is a lot of work to do. He has a tough job and anyone coming in there would have known it was going to be because of the start they had made. Nigel has given them a chance and we know it is going to be tough.

Steve added: “He has to cope with that added pressure of being in charge of a big club in a lower league and if we can get a result against them then that would be a huge lift.”
