Steve Davis on Ikpeazu double at Bradford
Steve Davis says that Uche Ikpeazu is still playing catch up with his fitness levels after joining us on loan from Watford. With the Championship side not participating in the Under-21 leagues, Ikpeazu has found game time hard to come by this season, but he is grateful to be involved in competitive football here at Crewe.
The former Reading youngster scored twice on his senior debut in Saturday’s thrilling 3-3 draw with Bradford City and Davis has admitted that if he had been fitter sooner he would have played more than he has thus far.
The Alex boss told the club’s official web-site: “If Uche had come here fit then he would have played more. He would have gone into the team because that is why we were eager to bring him in but he was miles away from being able to play.
“He ran himself into the ground in the first half and had rolled his ankle so he had to strap that up. It was a concern for us but he wanted to go back out there and we kept him on.
“He was disappointed when we made the decision to take him off but he played over an hour and had worked hard. I explained to him why we made the change and we were pleased with his contribution.
He added: “Uche is a powerful lad and is a threat in and around the box. He just needs to get up to the speed required in terms of his fitness, so he can last the games but he is working hard.”
