Boss says goal threat will ease pressure on the back line

Steve Davis has told the club’s official web-site that the loan signings of Nicky Ajose and Uche Ikpeazu will ease the pressure on his back five. The Alex boss was delighted to have two Championship strikers to his ranks and says they provided a threat in the final third against Doncaster Rovers on Saturday.

Crewe Alexandra couldn’t quite see the game through and James Coppinger’s late equaliser from a corner prevented the Railwaymen from securing all three points.

Steve told crewealex.net: “It doesn’t particularly matter how much possession you have if you don’t score goals. It is all about putting the ball in the net and providing a threat in the final third.

“You can have 60-70% of the ball in front of a defence but not have any shots. It is about being a threat and finding a way to hurt the opposition.

“That is why having strikers of taking chances is important and I have wanted to improve that aspect of our squad for a while. I wanted that competition in the summer but we have had to be patient and wait for the players we wanted.

“People have to remember that we won’t necessary be top of the list but we have worked hard to get two Championship players in.

“I am pleased because they offered some excitement up there. We were more of a threat, got in behind them and had opportunities.

“Having the two lads in on-loan gives us hopes and will take some of the pressure off the lads. Now when we go a goal behind or it is tight, we can get back into it. Their arrival has given the place a massive lift and it will put the squad in a better place mentally.

He added: “The back lads will be better equipped because they will be thinking that the game is not totally over if we concede one or two. “
