Alex boss praises his players after a seventh point picked up over three games
Steve Davis was delighted after his batting Crewe Alexandra side picked up a hard fought point against Preston North End at Gresty Road in their final game of 2014. In a tight affair, with few genuine chances until the last 20 minutes, Crewe just couldn’t hold onto their lead provided by young George Cooper after 81 minutes. Fellow second half substitute Jermaine Beckford equalised just two minutes later to mean the points were shared.
After collecting 7 points from the last three games against Bristol City, Oldham and now Preston, the Alex boss told the club’s official web-site: “I am delighted with the Christmas we have had. It was a really hard game for us against another top side, especially with this one coming after playing at Oldham with ten men for half an hour.
“I would have taken that before the game but when we scored through George (Cooper) I thought go on can we hold on to it, but to their credit they were pressing us for much of the second half.
“The last 20 minutes was value and the game lifted. Preston are a good side and it was always going to be a difficult game. It was a great point all things considered.
“Preston were difficult to break down and hard to get through but we regrouped at half time and worked out more of a way to get round them or over them. We didn’t create too many chances and in truth they didn’t until Beckford came on. That shows the strength in their squad when they can bring someone like him on to try and change the game.
“They are up there for a reason and we just thought if we could score the first goal then he would have a chance but we couldn’t hold on long enough.
He added: “I am delighted for the players that their hard work has seen them get something out of the game. The belief is coming back and we have had a great three points.”
