Steve believes his side are not far off turning performances into points
Steve Davis says that Crewe Alexandra and its supporters can take great encouragement from Saturday’s performance at Scunthorpe United last weekend. The Alex deserved something from the game after conjuring up a hatful of decent chances, but a combination of not taking those chances and some excellent goalkeeping from Sam Slocombe made for a frustrating afternoon at Glanford Park.
The on-loan Nicky Ajose scored the Alex goal and he went as close as you go with two well struck free-kicks. His second free-kick forced Slocombe into a quite brilliant save in the second half. Crewe didn’t convert the better of the chances and were made to pay when centre-half Miguel Llera tapped home a late winner for the Iron.
Steve told the club’s official web-site: “It was a frustrating afternoon for us because we played well and had nothing to show for it. At times we were unplayable and the front two were a real handful. We just didn’t convert those chances and I didn’t think we were in danger of losing the game.
“We just couldn’t turn that dominance we had into more goals. I think if we had got that second goal we would have had the confidence to go on and win the game comfortably. It can happen like that sometimes and I cannot fault the players for their effort.
“We gave away two sloppy goals from our point of view and we know we have got to be better there. They were gifts and we need to get back to keeping those clean-sheets, because if we can do that then we have players who can score goals.
He added: “With the strikers we have managed to get in and with Lauri Dalle Valle to come back into it, we have a real goal threat to go with the players we have here. “
