Steve Davis pleased with Cooper's contribution for the Youth team

George Cooper certainly shone for the Crewe Alexandra Youth Team on Wednesday evening, scoring the opening goal in a famous 2-1 win over Fulham in front of the watching Steve Davis. The Alex first-team boss was delighted with the performance of the club’s young players as they deservedly made it through to round four of the FA Youth Cup for the second year in succession.

Cooper’s display for the youngsters could now see him back in the frame for the first-team’s trip to Scunthorpe tomorrow.

Steve told crewealex.net: “I was delighted for the boys and for Alex (Morris) and Kenny (Lunt) who had put a lot of hard work into it. I thought it was their first real challenge of the competition against a very good Fulham side and they came through it well. They could have scored a few more as well.

“It was a good game with a lot of technical and high quality players on display and our boys deserved to win. We had more of a cutting edge in the final third of the pitch and having George helped that.

“He wanted to play and show that he had improved and I think he showed that. He showed his potential and his qualities, got himself a goal and would have been disappointed not to have got one or two more as well.

“It is not easy dropping back down after he had played in the first team but he helped them.

The boss added: “He has only just turned 18 and to score two goals in 13 games is not easy in League One. He has done really well and has great potential. He still has a lot to do still and has to put the hard work in but we know he can become a really key player for us and have a really good career. “
