Steve Davis wants his players to make the right decisions at vital moments as we target first league win
Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis wants his players to be more ruthless in their defending after conceding 14 goals in all competitions this season. The Alex boss firmly believes that if we can tighten up as a collective unit then we have enough ability going forward to get our season going. There were certainly plenty of positives to take from our mid-week defeat to Championship side Bolton Wanderers. Crewe certainly produced their best half an hour of the season in the first half to go 1-0 up through an inspired Brad Inman. The overall performance enabled us to take Bolton through to extra-time and there were some really consistent displays on show against players from a higher league.
Davis was delighted with the response of his players and the spirit and character they showed when falling 2-1 behind in stoppage time to Jermaine Beckford’s first goal of the night.
Steve is looking for more of that consistency but wants those individuals errors cut out.
The Alex boss said: “The level of performance was high on Tuesday night and it set the standard. We are after 8 or 9 players playing to their potential every week. We had that on Tuesday night and we played well.
“The only thing that let us down was that we didn’t defend well enough, at times, as a team. It isn’t always about the back four or the goalkeeper, but us as collective unit.
“The only thing we needed to be on Tuesday night and need to be going forward is tighter. If we can be really ruthless in our defending and make the right decision at the right moments then we will be fine in this league.
Steve added: “We scored twice against Bolton, created chances and hit the crossbar twice, so our attacking play was good. Now we have to get that balance right and cut those errors out.”
