Scott Shearer disappointed to lose on debut but says youngsters will learn from defeat
Scott Shearer was disappointed to lose 2-1 to Fleetwood on his competitive debut for the club but the experienced goalkeeper says there were still plenty of positives to take from the performance at the Highbury Stadium. Crewe were a bit unfortunate not to take something from the contest after twice hitting the crossbar and captain Matt Tootle seeing his penalty saved just after the hour mark. If Tootle had converted his spot-kick it could have been a passage back in the game and Crewe could have collected the point that Shearer felt the overall performance deserved.
The summer signing from Rotherham United told Crewe Alex Player: “The lads were disappointed not to get something from the game with the chances we created and the performance we put in. We perhaps merited a point for our efforts but we paid the price for a bit of sloppiness for the first goal and the lad has hit a worldie for the second one. You can’t do much to stop those.
“We have to quickly move on from that. We have a lot of games coming up and there will be times when we don’t do as well as we did at Fleetwood and we will get the three points. That is how football works sometimes.
“There were certainly a lot of positives to take from the game and we are a young team who will learn from this. The young lads will only get belief from the performance and they will be thinking that we can go away from home, to difficult places, and cause an upset.
“It could have happened at Fleetwood but we didn’t get those fine margins but we quickly move on and go again at Barnsley.”
