Crewe to continue to assess defender George Ray following his facial injury

Crewe Alexandra will continue to assess defender George Ray after the club’s centre-half suffered a nasty facial injury against Bolton Wanderers last night. Ray needed extensive treatment on the pitch and the delay eventually led to eight minutes of stoppage time, from which both Jermaine Beckford and our own Marcus Haber scored.

Ray needed five stitches under his eye and was immediately substituted for Greg Leigh, as manager Steve Davis took no risk with a head and facial injury.

Steve had told crewealex.net: “George suffered a nasty cut under his eye. He has had five stitches and we didn’t take any chances with him. We wouldn’t take any chances with any of our young players.

“We looked after him and the medical staff only took him off on the stretcher when he was ready. We will continue to assess him this week before we decide what to do for the weekend. Jon (Guthrie) came across and covered and he was fine, but if George is unavailable then that would leave us a bit short there.

“It is something we will have to look at going forward because we are without Harry (Davis) at the moment as well.”
