Returning midfielder back in the frame
A resurgent Lee Molyneux could be back in the Crewe Alexandra squad tomorrow for the first time since last November. Molyneux is expected to travel to Fleetwood for tomorrow’s opening game of the season at the Highbury Stadium and will be hoping to make only his 10th appearance for the club since his switch from Accrington Stanley last summer.
Molyneux, 25, returned to Accrington on loan last season and he ended the season scoring six goals, including a hat-trick against Chesterfield in March.
Molyneux has returned to South Cheshire and has participated in pre-season games and although he has not scored a goal himself he has provided two superb assists for Callum Saunders’s diving header at Nantwich and slipped in Oliver Turton for the opening goal at Southport.
Manager Steve Davis says that the door is open for the former Everton and Southampton starlet to resurrect his Alex career.
Ahead of the season opener, Steve told us: “Lee has come back and worked hard. He has done well in pre-season and he has every chance of being involved in the early part of the season. He is treated like any other player. If they impress they go into the team then it is up to them to play well enough to stay in.
“Lee came to us after a good end to the season with Accrington and I think he expected to play. He thought he was just going to go straight into the team and maybe after being at Everton and Southampton and doing so well at Accrington he thought it would be easy. He soon realised that there were other good players here and the competition for places was severe.
The boss added: “He has had to get used to that and has realised that he has to work hard to get above the others. He has certainly worked hard over the summer and he will certainly be in-and-around the squad.”
