Boss says defence will have to be at top of their game to contain Preston's forward line
Steve Davis is aware of Preston North End’s firepower and says his players will have to defend as well as they have done in recent games to keep them out. Crewe need a positive result to give us a chance of remaining in League One for next season and the Crewe boss says that two clean-sheets and only a late consolation goal at Shrewsbury has been a real positive going into such a vital final game.
Ahead of the visit of Preston, Steve told crewealex.net: “We have been able to take some momentum into the final game. We have been on a little run of not being beaten and have kept two successive clean-sheets. That is rare with us and a third clean-sheet would give us a great chance.
“We are looking for a positive result but we also appreciate that Preston are one of the best teams in the division. They have had a really good season under Simon (Grayson) and of course have the play-offs to look forward to.
“They have some great firepower up there with the likes of Garner, the two Davies, Gallagher and Stuart Beavon. Holmes is a class player on the left as well, so we know why they have been successful this season.
“We will have to look to contain them like we did to Bristol City last weekend. The back four were solid and restricted them to only two or three chances. They have defended well and have had the protection of those in front of them as well.
“It is in our own hands and we know it will be a tough ask against a good side, but there is no reason with the home support behind us that we cannot get the result we need.”
