Peter Ellson - A Tribute

16 April 2014

Sad passing of one of our finest ever goalkeepers

Everyone at Crewe Alexandra was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of one of our finest ever goalkeepers, Peter Ellson, earlier this week. Following on from his work with the Railway Police, Peter was fondly nicknamed ‘The Railway Policeman’ during his time here at Gresty Road.

Born in Audlem in 1925, the agile goalkeeper signed for the Alex in 1949 and went on to make 234 appearances and was a consistent selection between April 1949 and September 1951.

Peter was easily recognisable in his green jumper and distinctive cap. His Crewe career continued until April 1956 and he later joined Runcorn in the Cheshire League.

Our deepest sympathies go to Peter’s close family and friends.
