Boss disappointed by lack of quality in the final third after great Shrewsbury showing

Although satisfied with four points from our Easter programme, Steve Davis was still disappointed that we didn’t create too many chances to claim all three points against Colchester United on Monday.

Crewe’s best chance over the 90 minutes saw Uche Ikpeazu head inches wide of the target after a superb cross from Byron Moore. Colchester came even closer with Freddie Sears hitting the inside of the Crewe post in the second post.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “If someone had offered us four points before the Easter games then I would have probably have taken it. I was satisfied with that return but I was disappointed that we didn’t create a great deal against Colchester.

“We didn’t show enough quality in the final third and I didn’t think either side deserved to win the game.

“I thought we passed the ball well and look a threat for 20/25 minutes in the first half but then lost our way a bit and maybe some nerves played a part with some of them. It was like they didn’t want to be the player who made a mistake that led to a goal. That can happen and it takes courage to play under that pressure.

He added: “Uche had our best chance with the header. He steered it wide and we didn’t cross the ball enough. We had worked on Byron crossing for Pogbs at the far post, so he was up against the smaller full-back but we didn’t really do that in the game.”
