Steve says he would love to take the club back to Wembley to defend our trophy

Steve Davis says he would love to take Crewe Alexandra back to Wembley to defend the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. Crewe kick off the defence of the trophy against Accrington Stanley this evening (kick off 7.30pm) and are suffering a heavy defeat at Swindon at the weekend, Davis is hoping that a strong performance will prove to be a catalyst for a better run in the league.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “No-one has ever defended the trophy, so it would be nice to do that again.

“We'd love a trip back to Wembley and that’s what we will try to do, but teams will be going all out to make sure we don't retain it.

“We always take the competition seriously and it is great for the fans, especially as you get closer to reaching the final. It is a realistic target for all lower league clubs to get to play at Wembley and I’m sure the supporters had a great day out back in April when we won it for the first time ever.

“But I am just targeting winning a game at the moment. We need to get back on track and our home form has been fairly good this season.

“I think Accrington have had a tough start to the season and it is an escape for them too. We have more to lose than them as we are expected to win, so the players have to go out and put the wrongs of the weekend right, the players have to respond.”
