Steve says youngsters' performances resulted in team shake up

Steve Davis says that the inclusion of young players Jon Guthrie, Oliver Turton and Max Clayton at Oldham on Saturday shows that the players are judged on their performances for the reserves and the attitude in training.

The Crewe boss reverted back to his young guns following a disappointing 3-0 home defeat by Walsall and was rewarded with a hard working display and a point at Boundary Park. Davis also handed young midfielder Liam Nolan his debut for the club in the second half as Crewe held on to a well -deserved 1-1 draw.

Davis told the club’s crewealex.net: “The lads that came into the team did well until they tired in the second half and we had to make a few changes.

“I just think I picked the right team for the game and it proves that each day the players are assessed. They are assessed at training and they assessed when they play in the reserves or the Under-21s.

“I’ve said all along that it is up to the players to pick themselves through their performances. They get a chance and have to perform to keep the shirt.”
