I Understand The Fans Frustration

3 September 2013

Matt Tootle says improvement will come after indifferent start to the new season

Matt Tootle has told the club’s official web-site that he has been left scratching his head on why Crewe Alexandra have conceded so many goals this season to make it an indifferent start for us. Strangely, Crewe have conceded 15 goals in six games after we dramatically improved our defending last season.

The versatile defender, who has been operating at left-back so far this season has revealed that everyone is trying to get to the bottom of why.

Tootle told “The gaffer is not happy. We’re not happy and we have to get to the bottom of why we are conceding so many goals. We have to work hard and find a way to get back to what we were last season.

“I don’t want anyone to get overly panicky. We got beat 5-1 at Brentford early on last season and that wasn't the best start to the season. I'm not making excuses, it's not acceptable, and on behalf of the lads I can only apologise to the fans for Saturday. It's not fair.

“I understand the fans being frustrated and upset but a lot of things can go right for us this season.

“I still think we have a good enough squad this season to push for play-offs but at moment we just need to get ourselves consistent and stop conceding goals. I can't but my finger on it, maybe a lack of confidence. We can just every day on defending and hopefully see an improvement.

Toots added: “It's just about getting some belief and starting winning. As a positive we are unbeaten at home still and if we can make it a fortress then going away will be looking for points here and there.”
