Steve: "Same Mistakes"

26 October 2013

Alex boss gives us his reaction from Bramall Lane

Steve Davis was annoyed that the same defensive mistakes cost his team a chance to get a positive result from a trip to Bramall Lane. Crewe switched off from two set-plays to allow Harry Maguire two free headers inside half an hour to put Nigel Clough in the driving seat.

After the 3-1 defeat, Steve told the club's official web-site: "I am having to say the same things over again. I didn't think there was much in the game for the first 18 minutes and then we haven't marked properly at the free-kick and he has had a free header. It is the same with the second goal and those lapses of concentration or organisation have cost us. As a defender you have to mark your man. It is the fundamental part of being a centre-half and a defender. George Ray will have to learn from that.

"We had some chances and perhaps if we had got one to make it 2-1 before half time or just half time then it would have made them a bit nervous. You could feel it and we had a great chance to do that at the far post when Byron (Moore) got in but he couldn't keep his shot down and a few minutes later they scored their third goal.

"We kept going and made some chances, Chuks hit the woodwork and Max took his goal really well. He slid in behind the centre-half and tucked it away really calmly. Hopefully this could be a start for him, to get his season going again. We have been saying that about a few over this season and they have to do on a daily, regular basis.

"I will sign a midfielder player on loan and I would get another two or three in on loan if I can. I think it is time to make changes now. I have given some of them a lot of chances and we have been saying the same things to them. I cannot keep saying that to them because we will get to March and it will be too late to get us out of trouble."
