Steve delighted as his players persistence pays off

Steve Davis says he was 90% certain that Byron Moore would keep his cool to fire home the stoppage time penalty that sealed back-to-back wins for the Alex. Moore won and converted the spot kick himself to give Crewe all three points against a luckless Bristol City.

After a dramatic end to the game, Davis told crewealex.net: "Bristol City had their best spell of the game in the last 15 minutes, they put Ryan Taylor on and went for it a bit. They were gambling and pushed the full-backs on. They are looking for those wins like we are and I thought the size of Taylor made a difference to them.

"Other than that I thought we were good in the 70-75 minutes before that spell and I genuinely thought we deserved it. We played some really good football and created three or four really good chances in the first half. How their goalkeeper has saved that one onto the crossbar I don't know. That was an unbelievable save after what was a fantastic move and great volley from Byron. We had a few chances in the second half and we kept going.

"We still have our flaws and we need to pass the ball quicker and that is ongoing in the training. We have been more solid at the back with Abdul in front of them, intercepting things and giving them some extra protection. It was a tense game and we defended well. We put bodies on the line and that is what we have been after and we have snatched the points. Sometimes you snatch them and sometimes you get it snatched from you. We have had them snatched from us against both Rotherham and Peterborough at home, so this one was our day.

On the winning spot kick and the taker, Steve Davis told us: "Byron showed great courage because it was virtually the last kick of the game and the opportunity to win the points. He had won the penalty as well after being bundled over. It was more clumsy than anything but he has tripped him. I have seen them given and I've seen them waved away. So maybe we got fortunate there.

"We didn't have Harry (Davis) there to take it, but we are fortunate because we have four or five good takers here. I was 90% certain he would score because I've also seen them miss them in training."
