Steve Davis says young defender will learn after mistakes

Steve Davis is confident that the club’s Wales Under-21 defender George Ray will learn from his mistakes after his lapses of concentration at set-plays allowed Sheffield United’s towering defender Harry Maguire to head home unmarked on Saturday.

Ray, was recalled to the starting line-up ahead of Mark Ellis for the weekend trip to Bramall Lane and the boss was pleased with his overall defending, but was left frustrated with his loss in concentration inside the box from a Ryan Flynn free-kick and then corner from what put Sheffield United in a positive position going into the second half.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “George is still a young lad learning the game. He is 20-years-old and is going to make a few mistakes. He started the season in the team and made some mistakes so we took him out of the firing line.

“His general defending was good, he competed well and didn’t make too many mistakes in general play, but he has lost Maguire twice from set-piece and it has proved costly.

“If he can cut out the mistakes he makes and he will in time then he will become a good player.”
