Steve says players are self-motivated for local derby
Steve Davis says that two disappointing results against Brentford and Wycombe Wanderers in the FA Cup should only provide extra motivation for the club’s first derby encounter of the season against Port Vale on Saturday. The Crewe boss was bitterly disappointed to have exited the FA Cup at the first round stage and he has challenged his players to respond in one of the biggest games of the season. He says the importance of a result for the fans is usually enough to motivate the group.
Ahead of the local derby, Steve told the club’s official web-site: “We after still looking for that real turning point in our season. We thought we might have had it when we had back-to-back wins over Preston and Bristol City but then we couldn’t keep that going.
“Hopefully, that will come against Port Vale on Saturday. I don’t have to particularly motivate the players for this one. They know how important it is to the supporters and for everyone associated with the club. All of them want to play in this type of game and atmosphere.
“A local derby against Port Vale is always a mouth-watering game and if we can produce that good performance and result then it just may be the spur we need to turn things around.
He added: “There is no better confidence boost than winning a local derby and a result would certainly help us.”
